The wait now has an end date, and it is not this year.

Variety reported that Varanasi, the adventure epic from SS Rajamouli starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, has unveiled a 2027 release date. Prithviraj Sukumaran is in the cast, and Telugu trade reporting has him in the antagonist role.
The film has been in development and production for an unusually long stretch even by Rajamouli standards. Pinkvilla reported earlier this year that the director confirmed a shoot wrap target of June 2026, and Telugu trade site Gulte has since reported production progressing with an expected completion around October.
The genre framing matters. Variety describes it as an adventure epic. That is a deliberate step away from the historical-mythic register of Baahubali and the revolutionary period drama of RRR, and towards something closer to a globe-trotting action-adventure. Rajamouli has spoken publicly about wanting to make a film in that mode.
Mahesh Babu is the notable absence-turned-presence here. He is one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars and has been one of the most conspicuous non-participants in the pan-India wave. His first Rajamouli collaboration arriving as an English-inclusive global production is the kind of alignment that only happens once.
BACKGROUND
Rajamouli’s position in Indian cinema is difficult to overstate. Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2 did not just make money, they invented a distribution category. Before them, a Telugu film that did big business in Hindi markets was an anomaly. After them, it was a plan.
RRR then did the thing Indian cinema had been chasing for decades, which was getting genuine global critical traction, culminating in the Best Original Song Oscar for Naatu Naatu.
So Varanasi arrives carrying a lot. It is the first Rajamouli film made with full awareness that an international audience is watching, and the casting of Priyanka Chopra Jonas is the clearest signal of that intent. It is also, per the reported scale, one of the most expensive Indian productions ever mounted.

WHY IT MATTERS
For the Telugu industry, this is the biggest single project on the board, and an enormous amount of 2027 planning is being done around it. Films get moved out of its way. Release calendars get built backwards from it.
For Indian cinema more broadly, it is a test of a specific thesis: that the pan-India model can scale one level further into a genuinely international production without losing what made it work. RRR succeeded partly because it was gloriously, unapologetically Telugu. A film cast and packaged for global consumption has to thread a harder needle.
And for Prithviraj, if the villain reports hold, it is a fascinating move. He is a major star and a director in his own right, and taking an antagonist role in someone else’s epic is the kind of choice that reshapes a career.
ADDITIONAL CONTEXT
A note on Rajamouli’s timelines. Baahubali took roughly five years across two parts. RRR was delayed repeatedly, partly by the pandemic. Long gestation is not a warning sign with this filmmaker, it is the method.
The 2027 date also puts it into a very crowded window. Indian cinema’s biggest projects are increasingly clustering in the same quarters, and a Rajamouli film is the one event that makes everyone else reconsider their slot.
The realistic expectation for the next twelve months is a title reveal event, a first-look campaign, and a glimpse. Rajamouli’s marketing has historically been patient and then overwhelming. Expect very little for months and then everything at once.
BENGALURU BAATH TAKE
We are going to say the quiet part: the most interesting thing about Varanasi is not Mahesh Babu and it is not Priyanka Chopra. It is Prithviraj Sukumaran potentially playing the villain. Rajamouli’s antagonists are the load-bearing walls of his films, and casting a Malayalam star who directs his own blockbusters into that slot is a choice with real intent behind it. Everything else about this project is scale, and scale is the easy part now. What will decide whether this lands is whether Rajamouli can still make you feel something enormous in a film built to be legible in twelve countries. That is a genuinely hard thing to do, and he is one of the very few people who has done it before.
