INTRO / HOOK
Ask anyone in Indian cinema to name the film that changed the business and you will get one answer, and it will not be from Mumbai.
MAIN STORY
Baahubali: The Beginning released in 2015 and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in 2017, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Prabhas. The Hollywood Reporter India’s feature on how Telugu cinema overtook Bollywood traces the line from Baahubali to Pushpa and identifies the films as the origin of what is now called the pan-Indian film.
Wikipedia’s entry on the pan-Indian film as a category cites the phenomenon’s emergence around this period.
News24’s tenth anniversary piece and Telugu Bullet’s retrospective both document the scale of the shift: a Telugu film released simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, marketed nationally, and performing in Hindi markets at a level no non-Hindi Indian film had previously approached.
The second film’s Hindi gross in particular broke assumptions that had held for the entire history of the industry.
BACKGROUND
Before Baahubali, Indian film distribution operated on a settled understanding: Hindi films were national, everything else was regional. Dubbed South Indian films existed but occupied a lower tier, played in smaller venues, and were not marketed as events.
That structure was economic rather than cultural. Hindi cinema had national distribution infrastructure and national marketing reach. Regional industries did not.
Rajamouli’s insight, as reflected in how the films were mounted and sold, was that a film with sufficient scale and a sufficiently universal narrative shape could bypass that hierarchy entirely, because audiences would travel to a spectacle regardless of its original language.
The mythological-fantasy register helped. It sat outside any specific regional register and worked as an Indian story rather than a Telugu one.
WHAT WE KNOW
Established: Baahubali: The Beginning released in 2015 and Baahubali 2 in 2017; SS Rajamouli directed; Prabhas starred; the films were released across multiple Indian languages; the second film achieved unprecedented performance for a non-Hindi Indian film in Hindi markets; the pan-Indian film has since become an established industry category.
Analysis, labelled as such: the causal claim that Baahubali created the category, and the assessment of which subsequent films succeeded with the model, are interpretive positions supported by trade analysis rather than settled facts.
WHY IT MATTERS
Three consequences are still playing out.
The first is economic. Budgets across Indian cinema rose sharply after Baahubali, because a national audience justified a national budget. That has been enormously productive and, as several expensive failures this year demonstrate, enormously risky.
The second is geographic. The centre of gravity of Indian commercial cinema moved south, and Hindi cinema spent years responding to a competitive dynamic it had never faced.
The third is about ambition. Baahubali demonstrated that Indian audiences would turn out for visual spectacle made in India rather than imported. That reset what filmmakers believed was possible, and directly enabled the wave of large-scale Indian productions that followed.
ADDITIONAL CONTEXT
There is a cost that gets less attention. The pan-India model rewards scale, spectacle and universality, and it structurally disadvantages the specific, small and local film.
Several industries have responded by chasing pan-India status with films that had no business being that large, and the resulting failures have made financiers more conservative about exactly the mid-budget films that develop new talent.
Malayalam cinema has largely opted out of the model and has had an extraordinary decade doing so, which is the most useful counter-example available.
The blueprint is real, and it is not the only one.
BENGALURU BAATH TAKE
Ten years on, the most striking thing about Baahubali is not the scale, it is the permission. Before it, an Indian filmmaker who wanted to build a world from scratch was told the audience would not turn up and the money did not exist. After it, both of those objections stopped working. The follow-on cost is a decade of films that mistook size for scope, and we are watching that bill arrive right now. But you do not get Kantara, or Mahavatar Narsimha, or half the interesting Indian cinema of the last decade without Rajamouli proving first that the ceiling was imaginary.
