Telugu cinema’s star system has been built around a particular kind of mass hero, with a lineage, an entrance shot and a specific relationship with the audience.
Nani never fit that. He came up through small, character-driven films and built a career on being the person in the audience rather than above it. His nickname, Natural Star, was a description rather than a marketing term.
What he also did, quietly, was produce. His production house backed a series of films by first-time directors, several of which broke out, which gave him institutional weight in the industry beyond his acting.
Dasara was the pivot. A darker, more violent register that his usual audience did not necessarily expect, and it worked, which opened up a category of film that had previously been closed to him.

The thing we like about Nani’s arc is that he did not become a star by becoming someone else. He stayed the guy who is convincing as a person, took on harder material, and let the range do the work. Telugu cinema has a very specific idea of what a top-tier hero looks like and it has rarely made room for anyone outside it, so this is a small crack in a fairly rigid structure. Watch the producing side as much as the acting. An actor who backs first-time directors changes an industry more permanently than one who opens a big weekend.
