Nag Ashwin has confirmed that shooting on the Kalki 2898 AD sequel resumes next month, according to Box Office Worldwide, with LatestLY reporting an October 2026 start for the Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan film.

Separately, and on considerably weaker ground, Telugu trade has been circulating reports that Naseeruddin Shah is in talks to join the cast. Deccan Chronicle filed it under buzz. 123telugu headlined it as casting buzz with a question mark.

Bengaluru Baath is reporting the shoot confirmation as news and the casting as unconfirmed.

What Happened

Kalki 2898 AD was one of the most commercially significant Indian films of its year, and its standing was reinforced this week when it won Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment at the 72nd National Film Awards, with the team photographed at the ceremony in Gujarat.

The sequel’s schedule has been the subject of repeated reporting across the year. Pinkvilla raised a February 2026 filming start earlier. LatestLY has now reported October 2026, with the director confirming a resumption next month.

The distinction between a shoot resuming and a shoot beginning matters here. The reporting describes a resumption, which indicates that some portion of the sequel has already been filmed.

No release window has been confirmed in the reporting Bengaluru Baath has checked.

The Naseeruddin Shah reports are characterised by their own sources as buzz and talks. Bengaluru Baath does not treat unconfirmed casting as established and is reporting it only to note that it is unconfirmed.

Why It Matters

Kalki 2898 AD is the most expensive bet in Indian science fiction and the clearest test of whether the country can sustain a genuine franchise in the genre rather than a one-off spectacle.

The first film worked commercially and has now been validated institutionally with a National Award. That combination is rare and it makes the sequel’s schedule a matter of industry planning rather than fan interest. Release calendars get built around a film of this scale.

The repeated movement in the filming timeline, from a reported February start to an October resumption, is the kind of drift that accompanies effects-heavy productions everywhere. It is not by itself a warning sign, but it does mean any release date discussed now should be treated as provisional.

On the casting reports: Indian film marketing leans heavily on unconfirmed casting chatter to sustain interest between announcements, and the chatter is frequently wrong. Bengaluru Baath’s policy is to report the confirmation and name the rumour as a rumour.

The Bigger Picture

Bengaluru Baath wrote on 20 September that Indian science fiction has a difficult commercial history, because the genre demands visual effects budgets Indian productions have struggled to justify, and that the recent exceptions succeeded by wrapping science fiction inside a recognisable mythological framework.

Kalki 2898 AD is the defining example of that approach, and its sequel is the test of whether the approach scales.

It also sits alongside Raaka, the Allu Arjun and Atlee science fiction film produced by Sun Pictures, which released its first look this month. Two major Indian science fiction tentpoles in active production at once is a first.

Bengaluru Baath Take

A director confirming a shoot date is news. An actor being in talks is not, and the gap between those two things is where most Indian film reporting quietly lives. The useful line here is resumes rather than begins, which tells you material already exists and this is not a project starting from zero sixteen months after its predecessor. Kalki is carrying the entire argument for Indian science fiction as a franchise rather than a stunt, and it now has a National Award to go with the box office. We will believe the casting when somebody says it on the record.
