Vishwanath & Sons, starring Suriya, has topped Netflix’s non-English film chart with a reported 5.8 million views, according to 123telugu.
The wider number is the more striking one. Sacnilk reports six Indian films appearing on Netflix’s weekly global chart simultaneously, ranging from Alia Bhatt’s Alpha to Vishwanath & Sons.
TrackTollywood reported the Suriya film at 5.5 million views and a global top three placing, a figure that differs from 123telugu’s. Bengaluru Baath is reporting both rather than selecting one.
What Happened
Netflix publishes weekly view counts for its top titles, broken into English and non-English categories for both films and series. Placing in the non-English film chart is the metric most relevant to Indian releases.
Asianet Newsable’s roundup lists Indian films currently on the platform’s top ten, including Vishwanath & Sons and Gandhari.
The films involved span languages and industries, which is the part that distinguishes this from a single breakout. An Indian presence of six titles on a global weekly chart is a function of volume and of post-theatrical windows converging, not of one film performing unusually.
No platform statement beyond the published chart data appears in the reporting we have checked, and the view-count definition Netflix uses has changed over time.
The Numbers
The reported figures, with the discrepancy flagged:
| Metric | Figure | Source |
| Vishwanath & Sons, views | 5.8 million | 123telugu |
| Vishwanath & Sons, views | 5.5 million | TrackTollywood |
| Chart position | Top of Netflix non-English film chart | 123telugu |
| Chart position | Global top three | TrackTollywood |
| Indian films on Netflix weekly global chart | 6 | Sacnilk |
| Other titles named | Alpha (Alia Bhatt), Gandhari | Sacnilk, Asianet Newsable |
Trackers report different view counts and different chart placings for the same title. Netflix’s own view-count methodology has changed over time and is not directly comparable to box office admissions.
Why It Matters
The six-film figure is the one with structural meaning.
Indian cinema’s streaming story has historically been told through individual breakouts, one title that travelled unexpectedly. A sustained multi-title presence on a global weekly chart is different. It suggests Indian films have become a reliable component of Netflix’s non-English supply rather than an occasional event.
That matters for pricing. Bengaluru Baath reported on 20 September that platform consolidation in India has reduced the number of serious buyers for digital rights, with visible consequences for what films can command. Demonstrable global chart performance is the counter-argument producers can take into that negotiation.
It also matters for what gets commissioned. A platform that sees Indian titles performing internationally rather than only domestically will commission differently, and the six titles on the chart are not from one industry or one genre.
The Bigger Picture
Suriya’s position here is worth noting on a week when Tamil cinema has had a mixed run of news. Dhanush has postponed OM: Chapter 1 to avoid a clash that included Suriya’s Scene, while Vishwanath & Sons is topping a global streaming chart.
The two facts describe the same industry from opposite ends: crowded and competitive theatrically, and performing well in the window afterwards.
Bengaluru Baath argued on 20 September that streaming did not kill Indian theatrical cinema so much as displace linear television, and that its clearest benefit has been extending the reach of regional Indian films far beyond their home markets. A Tamil film at the top of a global non-English chart is that argument in a single data point.
Bengaluru Baath Take
One Indian film on a Netflix global chart is a story about that film. Six at once is a story about supply, and it is the more useful one for anyone negotiating digital rights this quarter. Producers have spent the year being told their films are worth less than they hoped, which is true theatrically and demonstrably not true on the evidence of this chart. We would note the trackers cannot agree whether Suriya did 5.5 or 5.8 million views, which is a reminder that streaming numbers are published by the party selling the advertising. Useful directionally. Not an audit.
