Toxic is heading to ZEE5, with trade reporting placing the streaming premiere on 25 September, roughly a month after the film reached cinemas on 26 August.
Filmibeat’s Kannada desk reported the OTT release date update. TrackTollywood reported the ZEE5 date directly. India TV News and Sakshi Post also carried the platform and timing.
Bengaluru Baath reported on 20 September that the film’s digital rights position had deteriorated sharply, with The Week reporting that a pre-release offer of approximately ₹150 crore was rejected and that post-release bids had fallen to around ₹30 crore, with ZEE5 named as the platform still at the table.
The platform reported today is the platform reported then.
What Happened
The sequence, as it has been reported across the month, is unusually well documented for a digital rights negotiation.
Producers received a pre-release digital offer of around ₹150 crore and turned it down, seeking over ₹200 crore on the expectation that theatrical would deliver. The film opened at roughly ₹101 crore net in India on day one and about ₹140 crore worldwide, then fell sharply through the weekdays on negative word of mouth.
By early September, The Week reported bids around ₹30 crore, with makers weighing an OTT-specific edit to improve the film’s streaming prospects.
Bengaluru Baath has not seen a confirmed sale price, and no platform or producer statement disclosing the figure appears in the reporting we have checked. Whether an OTT-specific cut was made is also unconfirmed.
Wikipedia’s compiled figures place the film’s worldwide gross at ₹328.45 crore against a budget estimated at ₹500 crore or more.
The Numbers
The commercial arc, as reported across the month:

| Opening day, worldwide | Approximately ₹140 crore | The Week |
| Worldwide gross | ₹328.45 crore | Wikipedia |
| Budget estimate | ₹500 crore or more | Wikipedia |

| Post-release reported bids | Approximately ₹30 crore | The Week |
| OTT platform | ZEE5 | Filmibeat, TrackTollywood |

The deal values are trade-reported and attributed, not confirmed by any platform or by the producers. The final sale price has not been disclosed. Streaming date as reported by TrackTollywood and not confirmed by Bengaluru Baath against an official ZEE5 announcement.
Why It Matters
A roughly four-week theatrical-to-streaming window on a film of this budget is itself a data point. It signals that nobody involved expects further theatrical revenue, and that the priority has shifted to recovering whatever the digital deal is worth.
The wider consequence is the one Bengaluru Baath flagged on Sunday. Platforms price a film on expected viewership, not on what it cost to make. If the eventual announced value lands near the reported ₹30 crore rather than the rejected ₹150 crore, every Kannada producer pitching a large-budget film will find the digital conversation starting from a lower number.
That is how one film’s failure becomes an industry’s ceiling.
There is also a genuine second act available here. Plenty of films that underperformed theatrically have found large audiences at home, particularly action films with recognisable stars. If Toxic performs on ZEE5, it complicates the simple narrative considerably.
The Bigger Picture
Kannada cinema is having an unusually instructive year. Kantara: Chapter 1 crossed ₹852 crore. Mahavatar Narsimha became India’s first ₹1 billion animated film. Anant Nag received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award yesterday, only the second Kannada actor ever to do so.
Toxic is the counterweight in the same twelve months, and Deccan Herald has been asking in print whether pan-India ambition is hurting the industry.
Bengaluru Baath’s position has been consistent: the model works when the film is worth exporting and fails when the export was the point. The streaming performance over the next fortnight is the last piece of evidence this particular case will produce.
Bengaluru Baath Take
The platform everyone said would end up with it has ended up with it, which is not a twist so much as a confirmation. What we still do not know, and what actually matters, is the number on the cheque. A quiet close near the reported ₹30 crore reprices every big Kannada film currently being pitched, and nobody is going to announce that figure voluntarily. Watch the viewership instead. If Toxic does the numbers on ZEE5 that it could not do in cinemas, the story changes from a failure to a mispriced window, and those are very different lessons.
