A public endorsement from Rajamouli for a first-time director’s trailer is not a routine occurrence and carries genuine weight in Indian film circles.
BACKGROUND
Star children entering direction rather than acting is a slightly unusual route in Indian cinema, where the default path is a launch vehicle in front of the camera.
Directing is harder to fake. An acting debut can be carried by a star producer, a big banner and a loud marketing push. A director’s first film either holds together or it does not, and audiences can tell within twenty minutes.
The heist genre is also an interesting choice for a debut. It is structurally demanding, requires precise plotting and pacing, and does not forgive sloppy construction. It is not the safe option.
Sundeep Kishan, leading the film, is a Telugu actor with a substantial body of work, which adds a cross-industry element to a Tamil debut.

The genre matters too. Tamil cinema is currently in a phase of structural reorganisation at the top of its star system, and there is room for films that work on craft rather than star wattage. A well-made heist thriller with a strong lead is exactly that kind of film.
And there is an unavoidable context. Jason Sanjay’s debut arrives while his father holds the highest office in the state, which means the film will be read politically whether or not it has anything political in it. That is an unfair burden on a first film and it is also simply the reality.

A trailer endorsement is not a review, and audiences have learned to discount pre-release praise heavily.

Directing is the harder road and we will give credit for choosing it. An acting debut can be manufactured. A heist film either works or it collapses in the second act, and there is no surname that fixes that. We are also aware that no first film in Tamil cinema this year will be watched less fairly than this one, arriving as it does with the Chief Minister’s office attached to it. Our suggestion, for whatever it is worth: watch the film, not the family tree. Rajamouli does not hand out endorsements for fun, and that is the only part of this story that is actually about filmmaking.
