INTRO / HOOK
There is a before and after in Indian film music, and it is not subtle. Listen to a Tamil or Hindi soundtrack from 1990 and then one from 1995, and you are listening to two different industries.
MAIN STORY
AR Rahman’s debut as a film composer came with Roja in 1992. Britannica’s biography records the career that followed, including his two Academy Awards for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009.
Forbes India’s retrospective traces the arc from that Oscar through his subsequent musical innovations. Daily O’s assessment, headlined for better and worse, argues that he transformed Indian film music, which is a useful framing because it treats the change as consequential rather than simply good.
The World Soundtrack Awards named him a guest of honour, which is one measure of his standing outside India.
What the recorded history establishes is straightforward: a composer who arrived from a jingles and session-keyboard background, brought a fundamentally different production methodology, and became the most internationally recognised Indian musician of his generation.
BACKGROUND
Indian film music before Rahman was largely built on live recording with large orchestras, arranged and recorded in a studio session with the singers present.
Rahman’s background was in advertising jingles and electronic keyboards, and he built his own studio. That changed the method: layered, programmed, assembled over time rather than captured in a session, with electronic and acoustic elements integrated rather than separated.
It also changed who sang. He consistently used voices that were not the established playback names, choosing texture over convention, which altered the sound of Indian popular music considerably.
And it changed the pace. A Rahman soundtrack took time, which was a significant departure in an industry where composers delivered on tight schedules.
WHAT WE KNOW
Established: AR Rahman’s film debut was Roja in 1992; he won two Academy Awards for Slumdog Millionaire; he has been extensively honoured internationally; his production methodology differed substantially from the prevailing Indian practice.
Analysis, labelled: assessments of his specific influence on Indian film music’s sound, methodology and economics are interpretive, drawn from published critical writing.
WHY IT MATTERS
The methodological change is the durable one. Studio-based, layered composition became the Indian norm, and every composer working today is operating in a production environment Rahman helped establish.
The international dimension matters differently. Rahman’s Oscars remain the most visible Indian achievement in the awards space, and they demonstrated that an Indian composer could work in international productions without being positioned as an exotic addition.
The economics are the least discussed and possibly most important. Rahman’s standing helped establish the composer as a headline creative rather than a service provider, which is directly connected to the fee levels commanded by leading Indian composers today.
There is a critique worth acknowledging. The shift toward studio-layered production reduced the role of live orchestral musicians in Indian film music, and that employment loss was real.
ADDITIONAL CONTEXT
Rahman is frequently discussed as if his career peaked with Slumdog Millionaire, which is a misreading. His subsequent work includes substantial Tamil and Hindi soundtracks alongside international commissions, concert work and, more recently, work involving emerging technologies.
He is also part of a broader lineage that is often flattened in the telling. Ilaiyaraaja’s work in the decades before Rahman was itself transformative, and the two represent different approaches rather than a simple succession.
The fairest summary is that Indian film music has had a handful of genuine turning points, and Rahman is one of them.
BENGALURU BAATH TAKE
The Oscars are the least interesting thing about AR Rahman, and we say that with respect to the Oscars. The interesting thing is that he changed the machinery: how a soundtrack gets built, who gets to sing on it, how long it is allowed to take. Everybody working in Indian film music today is working inside a system he substantially rebuilt, whether or not they sound anything like him. Also, and we will say this quietly, go back and listen to Ilaiyaraaja afterwards. Indian film music has had more than one revolution, and we have a bad habit of only remembering the one that won an American award.
