Dhanush has confirmed that OM: Chapter 1 is being postponed, moving the Mammootty co-starrer out of a window in which it would have faced both Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 and Suriya’s Scene.
Pinkvilla reported the confirmation, noting that the shift avoids clashes with both films. An earlier Pinkvilla report had raised the possibility of a move to December 2026.
Confirmation from the lead actor is a materially stronger position than the trade speculation that had been circulating. Only Kollywood had reported on 21 September that the film was reportedly eyeing a new release window.
What Happened
OM: Chapter 1, also carrying the subtitle Udhiram, pairs Dhanush with Mammootty in what has been positioned as a large-scale action drama.
The congestion it was moving into is unusual even by Tamil cinema’s standards. Jailer 2, which Bengaluru Baath reported on yesterday, has Rajinikanth returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian under Nelson Dilipkumar, with a release date that has been reported several different ways across the year and which the makers have publicly said is not delayed. Suriya’s Scene is also in the frame.
Bengaluru Baath has not seen a confirmed new release date for OM: Chapter 1. 123telugu characterised the film as delayed indefinitely, while Pinkvilla’s earlier report raised December 2026 as a possibility. We are not treating either as settled.
The Numbers
The Tamil release traffic, as reported:
| Film | Lead | Status | Source |
| OM: Chapter 1 | Dhanush, Mammootty | Postponed, new date not confirmed | Pinkvilla |
| Jailer 2 | Rajinikanth | Release date reported variously; makers deny delay | Outlook, Gulf News, THR India |
| Scene | Suriya | In the same window | Pinkvilla |
| OM new date, possibility raised | – | December 2026 | Pinkvilla (earlier report) |
| OM new date, alternative characterisation | – | Indefinite | 123telugu |
Sources differ on whether the postponement has a target date or is open-ended. Bengaluru Baath reports both characterisations.
Why It Matters
Tamil cinema’s release calendar is in an unusual state, and this move is a symptom of it.
The industry lost its most reliable calendar anchor when Vijay left acting for politics and became Chief Minister, a development Bengaluru Baath covered on Sunday. What remains at the top is a smaller number of very large films, and when several of them converge on one window the damage is mutual.
A contested weekend takes a meaningful share off both films’ openings, because screens and showtimes are finite and exhibitors allocate to whichever has the stronger advance. For a film the scale of OM: Chapter 1, that is not a cost worth absorbing to make a point.
This is the second such retreat Bengaluru Baath has reported in two days. Yesterday, Hindi cinema’s December window cleared when two films moved and left Eetha a solo 4 December release.
Two industries, two days, the same conclusion: moving is cheaper than colliding.
The Bigger Picture
The pairing of Dhanush and Mammootty is itself worth noting. Both had a significant week. Dhanush received a Special Mention at the 72nd National Film Awards for Captain Miller and the Best Tamil Film honour for Raayan. Mammootty shared Best Actor for Bramayugam.
A film with two National Award recipients from the same ceremony has a certain amount of built-in positioning, and no obvious reason to spend it on a losing weekend.
The wider pattern across Indian cinema this month is toward coordination rather than confrontation on release dates. That is a rational response to an industry where a small number of films generate most of the revenue and a damaged opening cannot be recovered later in the run.
Bengaluru Baath Take
Two industries in two days have looked at a crowded weekend and decided that moving beats colliding, which is the most sensible thing Indian release planning has done in years. Dhanush had the weaker hand here, facing Rajinikanth and Suriya at once, and there is no prize for losing a screen-allocation fight bravely. What we would like is a date. Indefinite postponement is where films go to acquire a reputation for being in trouble, whether or not they are, and this one has two National Award winners in it and no reason to sit in limbo.
