Rashmika Mandanna Is Carrying An Action Film On Her Own, And The Mysaa Teaser Is The Proof

The teaser for Rawindra Pulle's action thriller presents the actor as a Gond warrior, in a female-fronted genre film of a kind Telugu cinema rarely finances.

What The Mysaa Teaser Shows

The teaser for Mysaa was released on 20 September, presenting Rashmika Mandanna as a Gond warrior in an action thriller directed by Rawindra Pulle.

India TV News, Onmanorama and Republic World all reported the teaser, with Republic describing a fierce and action-packed transformation. Bollywood Hungama had reported the pre-teaser ahead of the 20 September release.

Female-fronted action is not a category Telugu cinema commissions often, and almost never at a scale that gets a teaser rollout of this kind.

What Happened

The teaser was preceded by a pre-teaser, a two-stage rollout normally reserved for films the producers expect to carry a release window.

The reported framing across outlets is consistent: Mandanna plays a Gond warrior, the Gond being one of India’s largest Adivasi communities, in a film positioned as a high-octane action thriller. Gulte described the teaser as a larger-than-life spectacle.

Rawindra Pulle directs. No release date has been announced in the reporting Bengaluru Baath has seen, and the production budget has not been disclosed.

Bengaluru Baath notes that a teaser is a marketing asset, not a film. The reporting establishes what the teaser shows and that it was released. It does not establish anything about the finished film.

Why It Matters

Rashmika Mandanna’s commercial position is unusual. She is among the most bankable actors in the country across Telugu, Kannada and Hindi cinema, and almost all of that value has been built inside films fronted by male stars.

Mysaa is a departure, and its existence says something about where her leverage now sits. An actor gets a solo action vehicle financed at this level of promotional spend when the producers believe the name alone opens a weekend.

The Gond framing is the part that will determine whether this is interesting or merely loud. Indian commercial cinema’s record on Adivasi representation is poor, running heavily to costume and backdrop rather than specificity. A film built around a Gond warrior can be a genuine piece of regional storytelling or a visual grammar borrowed for an action film. The teaser cannot tell you which.

This is also the second major announcement this week to reach for indigenous and mythological material, alongside Mahaveer Karna.

The Bigger Picture

Bengaluru Baath wrote on Sunday that Indian commercial cinema’s structural resistance to putting a woman at the centre of a large genre film has cost the industry an enormous amount of untapped audience, and that Malayalam cinema had demonstrated the opposite with Lokah.

Mysaa is the Telugu test of the same proposition, in the industry with the most rigid star system in the country and the most specific idea of what a mass hero looks like.

Rashmika Mandanna also has an unusually busy slate. She was announced this month as playing MS Subbulakshmi in a biopic, and she is attached to Raaka, the Allu Arjun and Atlee science fiction film. An action vehicle, a classical biopic and a tentpole supporting role is a three-way career bet that very few Indian actors have been in a position to place.

Bengaluru Baath Take

Telugu cinema will finance almost anything for a male star and almost nothing for a woman carrying the same genre, so a solo Rashmika action film with a two-stage teaser rollout is a genuine crack in a very solid wall. What we are watching is the Gond material. Indian action cinema has a long habit of borrowing indigenous iconography for texture and then telling a completely generic story on top of it. Do that here and the film is a costume. Do it properly and it is the most interesting thing Telugu cinema has greenlit this year. The teaser looks expensive. That tells us nothing yet.
