MAIN STORY
The first film set the base. Gulf News reported Dhurandhar becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film in India at around ₹10 billion, roughly ₹1,000 crore, and separately reported it crossing ₹9.35 billion worldwide to enter the top ten highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
The sequel went further. Gulf News reported Dhurandhar 2 scoring the biggest Hindi opening in India at approximately ₹1.45 billion, roughly ₹145 crore, and subsequently crossing ₹16.4 billion worldwide, entering the global top ten highest-grossing films of 2026.
News24 reported the pair as a back-to-back achievement, with Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar delivering Bollywood’s highest-grossing film of the year twice in succession. Dhurandhar 2 tops the outlet’s list of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2026, ahead of Border 2 and Bhooth Bangla.
BACKGROUND
Aditya Dhar’s reputation was built on Uri: The Surgical Strike, a film that demonstrated a specific commercial thesis: a tightly made military drama with a clear emotional spine can outgross a star vehicle.
Ranveer Singh’s arc is the more interesting half of this story. He spent a stretch of years as Hindi cinema’s most visible actor and one of its least reliable box office propositions, with a run of expensive films that did not connect.
Dhurandhar reset that entirely. Whatever you think of the films, an actor going from critical goodwill and commercial uncertainty to fronting back-to-back biggest-films-of-the-year is one of the more dramatic career corrections Hindi cinema has produced.
WHAT WE KNOW
Confirmed by multiple reports: Dhurandhar became the highest-grossing Hindi film in India at around ₹1,000 crore and entered the all-time top ten Indian grossers worldwide; Dhurandhar 2 posted the biggest Hindi opening in India at roughly ₹145 crore; Dhurandhar 2 crossed ₹16.4 billion worldwide and entered the global top ten for 2026; Aditya Dhar directed and Ranveer Singh starred in both; Dhurandhar 2 is 2026’s highest-grossing Hindi film.
Not confirmed: budgets for either film, the split between domestic and overseas in the final figures, and whether a third film is greenlit.
WHY IT MATTERS
The global top ten placement is the part that actually changes something. Indian films have entered global annual rankings before, but it remains rare enough that each instance shifts how international distributors and streaming buyers price Indian content.
There is also a corrective here for a narrative that had hardened into fact. The industry consensus was that Hindi cinema’s ceiling had dropped permanently and that the big numbers now belonged to the South. Dhurandhar 2 does not disprove the South’s rise, which is real and documented, but it does demonstrate that the Hindi ceiling is wherever the right film puts it.
For exhibition, a ₹145 crore opening day is the kind of number that funds a quarter.
ADDITIONAL CONTEXT
A necessary caveat on all of this: gross figures are not inflation-adjusted, ticket prices have risen substantially, and premium formats carry much higher per-seat revenue than they did five years ago. Records fall more easily now than they used to.
The more meaningful metric is share of the year. A film being the biggest Hindi release of its year, twice running, with the same director and lead, is a structural fact that no ticket-price argument explains away.
The question for 2027 is repeatability. Two films is a run. Three would be a system.
BENGALURU BAATH TAKE
We have watched a lot of people spend five years explaining that Hindi cinema was finished, and we were occasionally among them. Consider this a partial retraction. What Aditya Dhar and Ranveer Singh have done is not magic, it is just the boring thing that always works: make a film with a clear reason to exist, put a lead in it who is fully committed, and do not assume the audience is stupid. The global top ten entry will get the headlines, and it should. But the line we keep coming back to is back-to-back. Anyone can have one enormous year. Two in a row is a method, and Hindi cinema has been short on those.
